Small Biz 100 Winner- Small Business Saturday

small business Saturday award

Small Business Saturday named Mums Bake Cakes as one of their SmallBiz100

Today Small Business Saturday named Mums Bake Cakes as one of their SmallBiz100. We are thrilled to be included among some fantastic business up and down the country but we think our award is pretty special…

For us, being included in SmallBiz100 is our way of recognizing and celebrating our bakers. As you likely know and may even be luckily enough to have tasted, our bakers are all extraordinary talented individuals.

We are the largest UK edible gift marketplace and without your support this wouldn’t have been possible.

Along with an invite to the House of Lords, Mums Bake Cakes is now part of the 2019 cohort of small businesses that will be celebrated nationally in the next 100 days leading up to Small Business Saturday on 7 December. The initiative highlights small business success and encourages consumers to 'shop local' and support small businesses in their communities.

With the attention that the recognition brings, co-founder Paula Wilkinson is determined to keep the focus on the professional baker community;

“For us, being included in SmallBiz100 is our way of recognizing and celebrating the bakers, many of whom are talented, individuals often without the marketing power to receive orders from around the world or country.”

She stresses, “Our mission has been to work with the bakers. We want to help make them more profitable, increase the profile of baking and improve local purchases – even from as far afield as Australia!”

Mums Bake Cakes is the only business of its kind operating UK-wide, vetting each professional baker in checking their insurance and registration before they can become part of the UK’s largest baking marketplace. Since its inception in 2016 there are over 500 bakers using the platform to support their business.

For the consumer the process was designed with time-poor, individuals in mind, providing a way to instantly find a locally delivered edible gift from anywhere within the UK within just a few clicks.

However, Mums Bake Cakes have also received attention from big household brands. Too Faced Cosmetics in the Boots Plc stores are one to have worked with Mums Bake Cakes seeing numerous bakers from all around the UK delivering hundreds of bakes on the same day as part of a marketing strategy.

“Opportunities like this would likely not have come by many of our bakers. We are excited to be able to provide this kind of exposure to our bakers.”

Paula continues, “We also receive orders from expats sending sweet treats to family in the UK or from people holidaying around the country needing a cake for a special occasion. We’ve even had an Australian bride organise her wedding cake for her UK wedding through us! These examples illustrate how we play a role in the independent bakers’ businesses, helping them to gain additional business they wouldn’t ordinarily have received.”

On the return of The Great British Bake Off, Paula says, “We’re thrilled that the announcement has come the same week that the series starts again. GBBO has done tremendous things for bringing the independent baking community to the forefront of people’s minds.”

On 13 September Mums Bake Cakes will be celebrated on @SmallBizSatUK social platforms. To mark their day, Mums Bake Cakes will be giving away special prizes for consumers and bakers - follow @mumsbakecakes on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to find out more.

Mums Bake Cakes is an online marketplace matching worldwide consumers with professional, registered UK bakers who deliver in their local areas. Supporting independent bakers, the platform provides opportunities for bakers to win business they ordinarily wouldn’t have received. For its customer-base, often time-poor individuals, the site provides an instant way to find and order a cake or sweet treat for an occasion with complete peace of mind.

Born out of co-founder Paula’s personal experience of attempting to arrange a cake in Wales to celebrate her niece’s final birthday after battling breast cancer proved too difficult. It resulted in Paula embarking on a 600-mile round trip to deliver the cake and so Mums Bake Cakes was created and serves as a legacy for Paula’s niece, Davina Jones, who lost her battle just before Mums Bake Cakes was established.

The company is committed to delivery by hand from the baker who made it. A mission which has supported hundreds of micro-businesses around the UK.

About Small Business Saturday

A grassroots, not-for-profit campaign, Small Business Saturday was originally founded by American Express in the U.S. in 2010. American Express remains the principal supporter of the campaign in the UK, as part of its on-going commitment to encourage consumers to shop small.

The day itself takes place on the first Saturday in December each year, but the campaign aims to have a lasting impact on small businesses.

On Small Business Saturday, customers across the UK go out and support all types of small businesses, online, in offices and in stores. Many small businesses take part in the day by hosting events and offering discounts.
