Have you always enjoyed cooking?

Sadly I am a useless cook but I love baking and could do it every day. I love having fun with it and trying out new ideas and flavours. I’m constantly looking at pictures of cakes and recipes and would love one day to do this full time.

How did you learn your trade?

My grandma first started baking with me when I was about 4 years old. We used to make butterfly cakes using the 4,4,4,2 recipe and I still bake all my cakes in ounces now and all my cakes follow what she taught me.

Have you always wanted to run your own business?

Yes! My dream/goal is to own my own café one day selling cakes and cupcakes. Having worked at a bakery for a short amount of time I have learnt how not to run a business and am really keen to make sure I can run Belmont Bakery as smoothly as possible.

How did you start?

I started at university making cakes for friend’s birthdays and then during my Masters I lived at home in Dorset and started doing farmers markets and food festivals. This was a lot of fun but once I moved to London I found it much more difficult (and expensive!) to get involved.

Were you nervous selling your first cakes which weren’t to family and friends?

YES! You always worry that people won’t like them, think they are overpriced, or that you won’t sell anything!

What would be 1 piece of advice for setting up a cake business?

Don’t undervalue yourself. It is easy to think that you are charging too much but in the end you have a talent/skill that the person ordering does not. They aren’t just paying for your ingredients, they are paying for the transport, electricity and, more importantly, your time!

Why did you join Mums Bake Cakes?

I saw the advert in a cake magazine and thought it would be a good way to break into the London market. I haven’t had a website before and was not sure where to even start! Mums bake cakes offered an easy to use platform, marketing and customers (who weren’t friends and family!) and the opportunity looked too good to be true!

How have you found working with Mums Bake Cakes?

It has been great! Creating the page on their site really got me to focus on my products and get a bit more organised with my business. My number of orders has increased, helping me to grow the business I have and I hope soon I will be able to take a step back from my full time job and bake more. Paula and Richard are extremely helpful, responding very quickly to emails and have really made the whole experience very enjoyable- I feel lucky to be part of such a great idea/enterprise!

What have you enjoyed most about working with Mums Bake Cakes?

I enjoy the reaction of people when you turn up with a cake. Often the person that ordered the cake is not the same as the one you are delivering too and it is wonderful to see their surprise when their cake arrives. My favourite was a cake made for a Grandson’s first birthday, with the grandma ordering the cake from Argentina. The mum was so happy it was wonderful!

    Hi, I live in Scarborough and run Shoreline Sugar Design. I have been in touch before but have resisted joining as a baker, as I was worried I wouldn't be able to turn around any orders quickly given my full time job with a local employer. I was interested to read about Sarah from Belmont Bakery in the same position as me. I am now looking to grow my business, and would like to sign up! I now also have a 5 star rating from Environmental Health. I have two questions, I do bakes other than cakes, would you accept these? For example I've just made a chocolate version of a bakewell tart. Also, my photos as they are at the moment are have all been taken by me, so I'm guessing you'd probably want some professional ones taking before I can upload any to your website?     Hi Sarah, We're so glad that hearing from one our our bakers has been helpful to you :) We have bakers on the site who do all sorts of bakes from cookies, brownies, tarts, baklava, macaroons and a chocolate bakewell tart sounds delicious. We absolutely don't need professional photos of your cakes, the majority of the bakers have taken their own photographs.
